Dickens family seek to overturn writer's dying wish for no memorials

In 1869, a year before Charles Dickens died, he wrote in his will that he wanted to be remembered for his work alone. No plaques, no statues, "no monument memorial or testimonial whatever"… Now, almost 140 years after his death, Dickens' final request has sparked an impassioned debate among his most ardent fans – and his family are suggesting his dying wish be laid to rest.

Why is it exactly that we give a rip what a dead author thinks?

Dickens was brighter than I ever hope to be so I say letś do it his way. I say no memorial.

kingrat, how dare you? There's no one on this earth richer than a dead author. We should respect those with money so that we can, somehow, get some of it.

I'm sorry, did I just get all cynical again?

I'm with Glorybe on this one. Let him have it his way. Who needs more statues anyway?

I'm not a big fan of statues either. Except when I have my own fascist dictatorship, then I'll have my nation put up a bunch of them of me.

Well, once you do we'd be glad to.
