Cory Doctorow discusses how fans can't find his new book--Little Brother--because they're looking in the wrong section. Perhaps some Wordsy readers who are adult and also male can shed some light on the assumption that going into YA sections suggests you're a child molester! When YA is bad, I rarely get anything out of it. When adult fiction is bad, I sometimes still appreciate things about the writing. Thus I don't go into that section much. However, YA fiction that I like I really like. It's usually not as complicated but that is double edged. Great literature doesn't have to be muddled, or contain multiple layers of meaning. On the other hand, it frequently leaves me unsatisfied because there isn't enough to chew on.
I think good authors should consider writing YA, if for no other reason than getting young people hooked on their writing when they are impressionable.
